The Ferrari 412 is the last representative of the model lineup that encompasses closely related grand tourers manufactured by the Italian carmaker from 1972 to 1989. The range also includes the 365 GT4 2+2 and 400, the longest-lasting production series by Ferrari. The 412 replaced the 400 in the lineup and received a more potent engine. It is a 5.0 L V12 good for 340 hp that provides an 8-percent increase in power and delivers by 9.5-percent more torque. The car can accelerate to 62 mph in 6.7 seconds, which is a remarkable number for the time. The model’s engine uses fuel injection and is bolted to a 5-speed manual or 3-speed automatic. Unlike the preceding 400 model, automatic-fitted versions of the Ferrari 412 come without exterior badges denoting the type of transmission the vehicle employs.

Apart from engine improvements, the 412 received ABS by Bosch – for the first time available on a Ferrari model as standard. The body of the car was upgraded as well. The Ferrari 412 comes with a deeper spoiler in front that enhances aerodynamics, body-colored bumper inserts, larger rectangular door mirrors, new alloy wheels with TRZ tires, and redesigned sill panels. In the rear, there is a black valance that incorporates exhaust pipes and fog lamps. Side window trim is chrome plated now, while window surrounds and windshield are painted black. The rear deck was raised in order to increase cargo space. The body of the 412 was designed and built by Pininfarina. Interior improvements include redesigned seats and control layout in the center console. Power-assisted steering was offered as an option.

The production run of the Ferrari 412 ended in 1989, with only 576 units made. The total number of cars manufactured within the entire series is about 3,000. There was no direct successor unveiled after the discontinuation, it appeared 3 years later and was named the 456 GT. Besides, Ferrari didn’t offer an automatic transmission on its models for about 7 years after the end of the 412’s run.
