Like the preceding 308 model, the newer 328 was divided into two subseries – the GTB that stands for Gran Turismo Berlinetta (the coupé version) and the GTS which means Gran Turismo Spider (the targa-topped version). While mechanically these two were almost identical to the 308 GTB and GTS respectively, minor upgrades were made to the exterior design and powertrain. The 328 figures in the model name refer to the engine displacement in liters and number of cylinders, 3.2 and 8 respectively. Throughout the four-year-long run, 7,400 units were built; finally, the 328 was superseded by the significantly redesigned 348 model.
