The Dodge Charger is a line of cars launched in 1966. The very first Charger was an iconic muscle car, introduced to take on the Mustang, which was the bestseller of the time. Being rather successful, the Charger was first upgraded in 1968. By 1978, when the car was temporary discontinued, the Charger had undergone two more upgrades. Despite sharing the B-body platform and most mechanicals, early Chargers differed notably both in trim level and exterior design. In three years, Dodge introduced the brand new Charger to be based on the L-body platform. Although being represented as a descendant to the famous series, the 1983 Charger was a subcompact front-wheel drive 3-door liftback that had neither styling nor marketplace to share with the original series. Discontinued in 1987, the Charger had no successor until the 2006 model made its debut.
