A constant velocity joint (CV joint), is a mechanical device for transferring torque over an angled connection. Unlike the universal joint, the simpler and cheaper alternative being employed by the automobiles for decades, the CV joint provides power transmission with no pulsation, which is why it actually has such a name. On the downside, the constant-velocity joint is far more complicated in its design and necessarily has a rubber boot, a pretty delicate flexible covering. This boot, besides simply keeping the joint away from the elements, contains grease that reduces the friction experienced by the assembly.

Once the boot is punctured or ruptured due to wear, grease goes out leaving the CV mechanism with no lubrication. Remaining lubricant collects sand and dirt, which increase friction and wear. As a result, the joint will get utterly worn very rapidly – some days can be enough. Therefore, the replacement of the damaged boot isn’t a sort of deed one should hesitate with. The new boots of inferior quality may look not worse than the finest ones, but rubber is different – they may crack in the first winter after the installation.
