The BMW i3 features an all-electric 170 HP and 184 lb. ft. of torque motor running on lithium-ion batteries and the top speed is limited to 93 mph. Thanks to the eDrive motor, the full torque is immediately available from a standstill and doesn't need to be built up first via the engine speed, as is the case with internal combustion engines. This gives the i3 high agility in various situations and impressive acceleration: from 0 to 60 mph in 7 seconds. To accommodate the battery size that was required to provide practical, electrically driven range, BMW engineers needed to significantly reduce the weight of the body and chassis. This is how the concept of LifeDrive architecture was born. This innovative construction consists of two separate parts. The upper Life module is a passenger module made of strong yet extremely lightweight Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP). The lower Drive module is made of aluminum and integrates the battery, electric drivetrain, suspension, and crash-absorption components. The LifeDrive provides the foundation of premium driving experience you would expect of any BMW, in an advanced electric car. The BMW i3 features Brake Energy Recuperation, which, when a driver takes his foot off the accelerator pedal, converts that energy into electricity that is fed back into battery storage to help enhance overall range.

For the BMW i3, a pump nozzle is replaced by a charging station. The company offers 360º Electric – a range of charging products and services for home and away. Via the BMW i Charging Station, the battery is fully charged in approximately 3.5 hours when charging at 240 volts, 30 amps. For drivers on the road, BMW provides ChargeNow to give car owners access to a network of public charging stations on the ChargePoint network – the largest public charging network in the U.S. and Canada. The BMW i3 is the only electric drive vehicle available in both full battery and Range Extender versions. The Range Extender applies BMW’s decades of experience with small internal combustion engines by adding a lightweight and efficient 2-cylinder gasoline engine to the i3. When the initial charge is almost depleted, the Range Extender starts to maintain the battery’s state of charge. This adds 50-75 miles per fill-up of the 1.9 gallon tank. Unlike other hybrid vehicles, the engine only produces electricity to charge the battery and never directly drives the wheels.

The i3 is equipped with numerous safety and security systems, including the Parking Assistance Package, BMW Assist eCall™ (the innovative technology that transmits automatic emergency notifications to a BMW call center), BMW TeleService (the system that monitors vehicle parts that are subject to wear and tear and transmits these data to BMW), etc. The i3 also features the BMW i Remote App that links to the vehicle and monitors its battery level, charging status, and other charging-related functions like heating and air conditioning.
