The history of the company goes back to the beginning of the 20th century, during the rise of the automotive industry. The establishment of what is now AAM started in 1917, when GMC constructed an aircraft parts manufacturing facility in Detroit. In time, automotive parts were added to the product line. Operated by Richard E. Dauch, AAM has grown from five former GM plants situated throughout the Midwestern United States to an independent multi-billion-dollar automotive manufacturer. Today AAM has over 25,000 associates working in over 90 facilities located in 17 countries.

One of them is the e-AAM™ technology developed for hybrid and electric drive systems to enhance fuel economy and decrease CO2 emissions. The company also invented the first-to-market EcoTrac® technology to combine the convenience and fuel economy of a FWD vehicle with the power and safety of an AWD system. Another AAM’s technology is the VecTrac™ designed to provide the tractive efforts of AWD when the front wheels begin to slip and ensure continuous traction when either of the rear wheels slip.
