The Acura EL was made particularly for the Canadian market, thereby it's not widely known. The EL is a compact entry-level luxury car built at Honda's plant in Ontario. It was a rebadged Honda Civic, though with a higher level of features. The EL model was first introduced in 1996 as a 1997 sedan and was a sales success. In 2001, the next generation EL came completely restyled and based on the 7th generation Civic. Acura badged the first-generation model ''1.6''and the second-generation ''1.7''. The EL's measurements varied a trifle within its progress (comparing the 1997-1998 Acura 1.6EL and 2001-2003 Acura 1.7EL), though the 103.1-inch wheelbase remained the same. The second-generation EL was available in Touring and Premium trim levels. Overall, the EL's production covered 1997-2005. In 2006, the EL was replaced by the Acura CSX available in Canada only.

The EL was offered as a front-wheel drive 4-door sedan. All first-generation ELs came with the standard D16Y8 1.6L I4 engine producing 127 hp and 108 rpm. While the next-generation Acura EL came with a more powerful and torquier VTEC-equipped 1.7L 4-cylinder SOHC engine for the Premium and Touring trim levels, and Limited edition as well. The horsepower rating remained the same – 127 horses. The EL models were available with a 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmission. There was a set of features making the EL different from the Civic, namely suspension and interior-exterior accessories and parts. They included headlight and taillight design, 15-inch 5-spoke ''turtle'' alloy wheels, and heated power windows. If to compare the first- and second-generation EL, changes slightly affected headlights, tail lights, front and rear bumper, grille, and trunk lid. The so-called 'aero kit' was made available for both trim levels as an option. It included such unique parts as front and rear lip, side skirts, and rear spoiler. Acura stopped badging the car ''1.7'' for 2013, instead using only letters for denoting the model.

The EL's standard configuration included a CD player and air conditioning only from 1999. The EL's successors had several interior additions including heated power mirrors, heated leather seats, power sunroof, cruise control, remote keyless entry, etc., apart from a restyled steering-wheel, another set of gauges, woodgrain and leather trim patterns, additional tweeters to complete the 6-speaker audio system. Above all, the second-generation EL got ABS anti-lock braking, though later on, the electronic brakeforce distribution system was standard in all EL models. The EL's most noticeable exterior and interior parts and accessories were upgraded for 2001 and 2004 models.
