The new 2023 Outlander PHEV has a bigger battery than its predecessor and offers three rows of seats, unlike the outgoing model that came with two. The battery’s capacity has grown from 13.8 kWh to 20 kWh, providing a longer electric range – up to 54 miles on the WLTC cycle, but in EPA’s terms, this should translate into the segment’s competitive 33 miles approximately. The PHEV is powered by a revised 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine and two electric motors, each driving their respective axle to provide AWD. The motors’ output is said to be increased by 40 percent this year. The non-hybrid 2023 Outlander range is powered by a 2.5-liter naturally-aspirated I4 that develops 181 hp and 181 lb-ft of torque and is mated to a smooth and responsive CVT.

Inside, the Outlander is identical to the Rogue. Gone is the plastic-laden cabin of the previous generation, giving way to a contemporary design with a horizontally-oriented dash, a “floating” center console, two-tone color combinations, and higher-quality materials and accessories. The Outlander is a seven-passenger SUV. While the first two rows are spacious and comfortable, the third one is miniscule. When hauling cargo is on the docket, the second- and third-row seatbacks fold down to create a nearly flat cargo area. Tech-wise, a notable feature is the availability of a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, Mitsu’s first. Also optional is a 9.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, an upgrade over the standard 8.0-inch unit.
