The new Sportage is bigger than the outgoing model. A 1.49-kWh battery that feeds the motor is expected to return 39 miles of electric driving. Another option for eco- and fuel-conscious buyers is the new Sportage PHEV. It is equipped with the same engine as the regular hybrid model but features a higher-power motor (66.9 kW) and a larger 13.8-kWh battery. The estimated driving range of the plug-in hybrid is 32 miles.

As many as seven trim levels are available for this year's SUV, giving buyers plenty of choices. Notable are the new X-Line, X-Pro, and X-Pro Prestige models, which gained standard AWD and are raised an additional 1.5 inches. While the X-Line is more of an appearance package with its unique front and rear end designs, different rims, black detailing, and an updated roof rack, the X-Pro models are more capable off-road thanks to all-terrain tires and traction-improving modes. They also come with such niceties as a heated windshield and LED fog lights.
