The 2022 Wrangler continues in two-door and four-door (called Unlimited) body styles and with either part-time or full-time 4-wheel drive. The doors and roof can be removed, providing a unique kind of driving experience. While the two-door SUV comes in Sport, Sport S and Rubicon trims, the four-door gives more options, namely the Sahara and Rubicon 392. The Wrangler has a slew of stout engines. A tried and tested 3.6-liter V6 serves as the base engine, rated at 285 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. Next up is a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder producing 270 horses. A favorite choice of off-roaders, a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 makes 260 hp and 422 lb-ft of twist. A hardcore 392 version comes with a 6.4-liter 470-hp V8. Introduced last year, the 4xe plug-in hybrid powertrain employs a 2.0-liter turbo four and two electric motors for a total of 375 ponies. The PHEV model can cover 21 miles on electricity.

The 2022 SUV offers wider availability of the Xtreme Recon package. Previously reserved for the Wrangler Rubicon, it can now be added to the lower-priced Willys, providing one more model to compete head-on with the Ford Bronco Sasquatch. For starters, the package brings 17x8-inch beadlock-capable wheels shod with 35-inch rubber. The suspension was raised by 1.5 inches and gained specially tuned dampers. So equipped, the Wrangler sports class-leading approach, breakover, and departure angles (47.4, 26.7, 40.4 degrees, respectively), ground clearance, (12.9 inches), and the ability to ford water (up to 33.6 inches deep). Other highlights include low 4.56:1 gearing, more capable brakes, and a stronger swing gate to accommodate a heavier spare.
