2022 GMC Sierra: What Changed?

The entry-level model previously known as simply the Sierra is now called the Pro. Other than that, GMC Sierra 2500 HD and 3500 HD versions enter this model year vir-tually unchanged. Like before, they are available with a standard 401-hp 6.6-liter V8 gasoline engine mated to a six-speed automatic and either a rear- or four-wheel-drive setup. The Duramax diesel 6.6-liter V8 with 445 horsepower remains optional. It’s teamed with an Allison automatic transmission with ten speeds. Their light-duty sibling, the GMC Sierra 1500 got lots of meaningful updates for 2022 and earned the number three spot on MotorTrend’s list of Best Full-Size Trucks.

• Exterior. The model sports a reworked front end and revised LED headlights.
• Interior. The SLE and higher trims now come with a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 13.4-inch center infotainment touchscreen. The cabin is trimmed with more upscale materials and loaded with even more tech features.
• New Trims. The new Denali Ultimate adds a nicer interior to the regular Denali. Both of them are available with Super Cruise. The AT4X offers more off-road goodies than the AT4 it is based on.
• Powertrain. A 4.3-liter V6 engine was discontinued for 2022 leaving four different mills to choose from. The 2022 Sierra 1500 is available with a Duramax diesel 3.0-liter inline-six, 355-hp 5.3-liter V8, 420-hp 6.2-liter V-8, and 355-hp 5.3-liter turbo-four. The last-mentioned engine now makes 37 more pound-feet of torque and is teamed with a refined eight-speed automatic.
