The regular 5-Series lineup again comes in 530i, 530e, 540i, and M550i trim levels, with RWD as a standard configuration and xDrive AWD as an option. The base 530i and plug-in hybrid 530e use different versions of a punchy 2.0-liter turbo four capable of 248 and 181 horsepower, respectively. The hybrid adds a 107-hp electric motor for a combined output of 288 horses. For those who want nothing less than an ultra-high-performance model that blasts like a missile and handles like a dream, the M5 ticks all the boxes. It is available in 600-hp “regular”, race-ready Competition, and 2022-only CS versions. All share a 4.4-liter V8 engine and all-wheel drive, however, it's still possible to have some rear-drive fun thanks to an advanced drivetrain that can route all of the torque to the rear wheels. Unfortunately, a manual gearbox is not available, but a brilliant 8-speed automatic doesn't disappoint the discerning driving enthusiast.

A step up from the M5, the track-ready Competition puts out 617 hp and is fitted with a firmer and lower suspension, while getting some unique accessories to stand out from the M5. This year, the limited-production 2022 BMW M5 CS is the top-of-the-line model. Not only it has the most powerful 627-hp version of the V8, but it is also 230 pounds lighter. Its hood, diffuser, splitter, spoiler, mirror housings, and front seats all have a carbon-fiber construction. To further reduce weight, the rear bench has been swapped for a pair of bucket seats, and less sound deadening material has been used. With all the upgrades done, the M5 CS can rocket to 60 mph in less than 3 seconds.
