The BMW X5 is the mid-size SUV of choice for those who value performance as much as practicality. The result is a combined output of 389 ponies and 443 lb-ft of torque, which is 81 hp and 111 lb-ft more than the outgoing model could put out. A bigger battery is on the list of changes as well, which brings twice more miles of electric-only driving. While the old plug-in hybrid could travel up to 14 miles on electric power, this year’s battery upgrades provide up to 30 miles. Electric-only top speed also gets a bump from 75 to 84 mph. As suggested by its name, the xDrive45e offers all-wheel drive. As for other choices in the 2021 X5 lineup, there are entry-level sDrive40i (RWD) and xDrive40i (AWD) trims powered by the familiar six-cylinder good for 335 horsepower. The M50i carries over with an impressive 523 hp that comes from a 4.4-liter V8. An 8-speed automatic takes care of power delivery regardless of the powerplant.

The X5 xDrive50i model is dropped for 2021, as are some options such as rear-seat entertainment, a full Merino leather interior, and a bundle of parts that improve the SUV’s off-road ability. The base sDrive40i adds wireless Android Auto to the already standard Apple CarPlay. The redesigned plug-in hybrid model got generous standard equipment, including BMW’s refined air suspension and twin 12.3-inch screens for driver information and infotainment functions. Like before, the X5 can be had with two or three rows of seats, accommodating five or seven people. The third row is kid-sized, while adults in the first and second rows are treated to supreme comfort. Regardless of the trim level, the fit and finish of the X5 is top-notch and materials are of high quality typical of a luxury SUV class.
