Debuted in 2006 as a concept version, the Renault Koleos became the very first crossover by the French automaker. Designed and built in partnership with Nissan, it borrows many systems and mechanisms from other crossovers developed by this Japanese company including an advanced All-Mode 4WD system and a well-tuned suspension. The second-gen Koleos was launched in 2016, and in October 2019, the Mexican market saw the new, facelifted version of this mid-size SUV offered for the 2020 model year. The Iconic is the most expensive and fully equipped version. It has larger two-tone 19-inch wheels, LED headlights, panoramic electrochromatic roof, power tailgate, ventilated and heated front seats, automatic parking assistant, blind spot monitoring system, 8.7-inch vertical touch screen, and some other useful amenities. However, when it comes to the engine and transmission, they are the same in all trims: it's a tried-and-tested gasoline 2.5-liter I4 engine mated to a CVT and developing 171 hp and 172 lb-ft of torque. This motor is also available in Australia but not offered on most other markets that received two diesel engine options instead.

These options include 1.8L and 2.0L dCI motors rated at 150 and 190 hp, respectively, yet the latter comes with all-wheel drive, the feature that is also unavailable in Mexico. Actually, Renault has never positioned the Koleos as a true off-roader, making it more oriented toward comfort, ergonomics, practicality, and other features more peculiar to MPVs, while its large ground clearance exceeding eight inches allows the vehicle to keep out of trouble on most country roads.
