For the 2020 model year, BMW introduced the first fully-electric Mini Cooper version called the Cooper SE. The vehicle looks almost identical and borrows most of the 2020 Mini Cooper accessories and parts of the gasoline and diesel versions of the two-door Cooper Hardtop but bears a single asynchronous electric motor under the hood producing 181 hp and features a 32.6-kWh lithium-ion battery pack placed instead of a gas tank and in the center tunnel to achieve lower center of gravity. This arrangement makes the car very nimble, stable during cornering, and offers the driver that unmistakable go-kart-like feel. On one charge, the vehicle can cover up to 168 miles.

The fast 50 kW DC charger can deliver 80% of the battery charge in just 35 minutes. To fully charge the battery using a regular home outlet with a Level 2 7.4 kW AC charger, the user will have to wait around 3.5 hours. The power is delivered to the ground through the differential on the front axle. Since the motor of the new Mini Cooper SE shared with the BMW i3s can instantly deliver 199 lb.ft of torque even from the full stop, the suspension system parts of the vehicle had to be heavily modified to handle higher stresses. The top speed is electronically limited to 93 mph. The car can speed up from 0 to 62 mph in only 7.3 seconds. The new Cooper SE can be driven in four different modes ranging from the most efficient Green+ to the high-performance Sport mode. The former uses brake regeneration to the max even allowing for driving with one pedal inputs while also disabling or limiting the operation of some accessories and systems, including climate control to extend the range.

Those obsessed with high speeds will surely be satisfied with what the 2020 Mini John Cooper Works GP offers. Its 2.0-liter turbo four is good for more than 300 hp and slingshots the car to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds. While delivering monstrous performance, the new Mini JCW GP returns decent fuel economy for the class, rated at 30 mpg highway and 24 mpg on the city driving cycle. A lowered sport-tuned suspension with stiffer bushings keeps the wheels planted, while the recalibrated variable rate power steering is more precise and responsive. Global production is limited to 3,000 copies.

The exterior of the electric Mini comes with a unique grille featuring a smaller opening than that of an internal combustion version since an electric motor does not require as much air for cooling. Standard 16-inch and optional 17-inch light-alloy wheels feature a unique asymmetrical design inspired by British power outlets with yellow accents that could also be found on the grille, mirror caps, fenders, and tailgate. The 2020 Mini JCW GP strikes with its exterior detailing. There are plenty of red accents everywhere from the grille all the way back to the eccentric rear wing. The car gained unique overfenders which consist of a plastic understructure and a carbon fiber upper layer.

For those who don’t wish to stand out too much in a crowd of conventional cars, a more toned-down exterior style is available where yellow accents are replaced with grey ones. On the inside, the new model looks like the regular car featuring usual 2020 Mini Cooper parts and accessories except for yellow trim elements, electric drive mode selector styled like an automatic transmission lever, push-button parking brake, the scroll wheel on the center console, and an LCD screen instrument cluster instead of traditional analog gauges. The basic trim level comes with a standard 6.5-inch infotainment screen. Its 8.8-inch version is available as an option. The interior of the all-new Mini John Cooper Works GP is stripped down, with a rear-seat delete and bare sound insulation aiding in weight reduction.
