Now in its fifth generation, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class trudges on for yet another model year with a more powerful base engine. After months of being spied in camouflage state, the vehicle was finally released to the public. Visual changes are small, but they bring a fresher look with a handful of 2020 Mercedes E-Class accessories slightly redesigned to set it apart from the outgoing model. At first glance, the newbie seems to be unchanged with its aggressively sculpted lower bodywork, sleek LED exterior lights, and other precisely crafted parts. However, this facelift still brought some aesthetic tweaks. Thus, the wagon version appears with a revised radiator grille. The sedan model received a slightly reworked front fascia with a new grille and reshaped headlights with integrated LED day running lights which have also been redesigned.
The biggest 2020 changes are under the hood where even small accessories are designed to provide maximum performance. This year, the base model hits the market with a four-cylinder engine updated with power-enhancing 2020 Mercedes E-Class parts. It actually debuted in the C-Class and GLC-Class vehicles. This year's GLE-Class SUV also has it under its hood. That turbocharged 2.0 L inline-four is now capable of pushing out up to 255 HP, which is 14 HP more than the previous version. Although the mill got a slight horsepower increase, torque stays the same at 273 lb. ft. To reflect the extra output, the designation for this model changed from E300 to E350. Other previously available V6 and V8 engines carry over from the previous model year.
Just like before, customers have a choice between rear-wheel and 4Matic all-wheel drive configurations. The latter is offered as an option. All other mechanical specs are unchanged. For instance, the vehicle comes standard with the multi-link independent suspension that can be had in base or firmer sport tune. Once inside, occupants will feel instantly welcomed, as the E-Class offers nothing but an incredibly comfortable interior packed with active driving aids and technology. Whether it's a sedan, coupe, wagon, or cabriolet, all parts and accessories of its interior are made of premium quality materials, just like before. The interior is roomy with enough space in both the front and rear seats. To ensure the E-Class is not only comfortable but also safe, the automaker equipped it with numerous safety technologies including active brake assist, attention assist, and many others.
On top of all the changes mentioned above, the automaker released the AMG E53 with an electrified 3.0-liter V6 engine teamed with a turbocharger along with an electric auxiliary compressor. That mill is capable of pushing out 429 horsepower and producing 384 lb. ft. of torque. An EQ Boost starter-alternator gives an additional 21 horsepower and feeds a 48 V on-board electrical system. Engine power is routed to all wheels via an AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission. As far as styling is concerned, the model sports a specially designed grille along with new LED headlights up front and two-piece tail lights, a reworked bumper, and new diffuser on the rear.
