The eighth generation of the Hyundai Sonata based on the all-new platform was introduced to the public in the spring of 2019. This mid-size four-door sedan was completely redesigned inside and out receiving the new, more sporty look with 1.18 inch lower stance and 1 inch wider and 1.77 inches longer body. Now, the model’s exterior features fastback, coupe-like outlines with long chrome inserts stretching all the way up from the headlamps, on the sides of the hood, and around all side windows making the car look longer. The front portion of these chrome accents incorporate hidden LED lighting as an extension of daytime running lights.
C-shaped taillights are connected with the central brake light on the trunk making the car look even wider. Upper portions of the taillights are integrated into the sides of the rear spoiler somewhat resembling tailfins from the classic models of the golden era of car design. The interior of the new Hyundai Sonata was reinvented as well. The designers tried to give it a modern feel and sleek look by introducing a lot of horizontal lines with chrome accents, new four-spoke steering wheel, push-button transmission control, large digital instrument panel, a wide infotainment system display, and soft leather upholstery. The optional powertrain of the new Sonata is claimed to be as striking as its appearance. The high-performance N-Line trim level that found its way to the lineup this year is promised to churn out over 275 horsepower.
The powertrain of the hybrid model consists of a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter 4-cylinder GDI engine generating up to 150 horsepower and an electric motor raising the resulting output to 192 horsepower. With its 52 mpg in the combined cycle, the Sonata Hybrid is perfect for those who want to save fuel. A 6-speed automatic transmission is standard. The new Active Shift Control system utilizes an electric motor to match the speeds of the gearbox and crankshaft resulting in 30% reduction of shift time. The new solar-panel roof stretches between the windshield and rear window allowing for an 800-mile increase in driving range per year in case of up to six hours a day of effective battery recharging.
As for the regular lineup, the base SE and mid-level SEL trim levels of the 2020 Sonata are powered by a naturally-aspirated 2.5-liter 4-cylinder good for 191 horsepower. On the other end of the spectrum, there are the SEL Plus and Limited models that get a 1.6-liter turbo four. In both cases, an 8-speed automatic transmission delivers power to the wheels. Even in the base trim, the new Sonata is pretty well equipped. Hyundai’s SmartSense safety tech and an 8.0-inch infotainment system are standard across the range.
Even though your 2020 Hyundai Sonata features all of the latest accessories, parts, safety systems, and comfort features, there is always room for improvement.
