The 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 offers a plethora of powertrains. There is an engine option for every need, including a 2.7-liter turbocharged inline-4, a strong V6, a newly available 3.0-liter turbodiesel, and two V8 versions. The CarbonPro Edition can be had with the diesel, while the models powered by a 5.3-liter V8 are available with a 10-speed automatic alongside an 8-speeder. When equipped properly, the half-ton Sierra can tow 12,200 pounds. The Heavy Duty’s 6.6-liter Duramax V8 offers the same power output as last year, namely 445 hp and 910 lb-ft, but upgrades to the cooling and air intake systems increase its efficiency. This year, it is married to a heavy-duty Allison transmission, which is the segment-first 10-speed automatic. Torque delivery is better thanks to this tranny’s closer gear ratio spacing as well as bigger, sturdier axle parts. The more efficient powertrain and a larger, stronger frame give the 2500 and 3500 HD their increased towing capability.

Inside, any Sierra is roomy and quiet, with plenty of upscale materials. The Denali is the plushest and most feature-packed model with many 2020 GMC Sierra accessories exclusive to it, including wood panels, unique aluminum décor, and seats upholstered in premium contrast-stitched leather. Following the 1500 model that became roomier last year, the 2020 GMC Sierra HD got a more spacious cabin with best-in-class head- and legroom for those sitting in front. Light- and heavy-duty Sierras can be had with the ProGrade Trailering System that uses surround-view cameras. Up to 15 different views are available, and those who own an HD version can benefit from the Transparent Trailer feature that shows the driver the rear view with the trailer almost invisible.
