This year, the Ford Ranger gets a number of off-road chops with an all-new FX2 package that includes both styling and performance improvements. What’s more, an RTR version made its way into the Ranger lineup. First things first, the new package is the automaker’s answer to the call of truck buyers seeking tough style coupled with the great functionality of a locking differential in a two-wheel-drive vehicle. From a visual standpoint, Ranger FX2 models have some new parts that aim to improve both appearance and driving performance. For instance, they have a front underbody guard instead of a standard chin spoiler, which is said to improve approach angles. Hands down, it also shields the underbody of a vehicle and provides even more distinction. The new package also includes 17-inch off-road tires with 18-inch ones offered as an option. While there are no new 2020 Ford Ranger accessories included to the FX2, there was no need for them as new off-road models look tough yet stylish enough.
On the mechanical side of things, the kit brings some of the gear offered on AWD FX4 variants. Among the items available on the Ranger FX2 are an off-road-tuned suspension and electronic locking rear differential that keeps both rear wheels spin at the same speed. The result of these changes is improved traction off-road. Finally, the package includes the carmaker’s off-road instrument cluster that provides the driver with useful information such as pitch, roll, and yaw details for tackling rough terrain with confidence. Despite the new off-road version, the 2020 Ford Ranger returns as a carryover model from the previous year. Just like before, the midsize pickup truck provides an unbeatable combination of good fuel efficiency, pulling power and smart tech. All its body parts and smallest accessories inside and out are designed with quality and durability in mind.
Under the hood, the pickup truck hides a highly capable 2.3-liter I-4 engine fed by a turbocharger. It’s capable of generating 270 horsepower which is sent to wheels via a class-exclusive ten-speed automatic that ensures smooth operation. All 2020 Ford Ranger parts and accessories under the metal operate in perfect harmony to provide the performance everyone expects from this renowned midsize pickup truck. On the safety front, XLT and Lariat versions come standard with the Co-Pilot 360 package that bundles most common driver-assistance features. The suite is optional for the base trim. To meet different customization and capability needs of drivers, Ford offers all previously available packages including the Chrome, Sport, FX4 and other kits.
The newly-available RTR (Ready to Rock) model gets power from a familiar 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine. On the mechanical side of things, the newbie got a great number of changes including the automaker’s performance cat-back exhaust that is touted to increase engine output and Fox 2.0 Performance Coilovers that are loaded with advanced off-road technology. From a visual standpoint, the model looks more aggressive than the regular Ranger with a specially designed upper grille with LED lighting, license plate frame, fender flares, 17-inch Tech 6 wheels (Satin Charcoal), etc. Customers can further customize their vehicle with an available leather package and grille with an LED light bar.
As one of the top-selling compact pickup trucks currently available on the market, the Ranger has great aftermarket support. From performance air filters to uniquely designed emblems and logos, there are lots of options to choose from. Those drivers who prefer to go the OEM route will be pleased to know that the automaker now offers three off-road packages for AWD Rangers. All of them include a leveling kit that brings Fox shocks and 17-inch Dyno wheels to improve off-road performance. There are also special graphics for a windshield and bed. The level one package brings the shortest list of improvements that includes improved front and rear shocks and distinctive graphics. The level two package adds a Ford Performance engine calibration, blue tow hooks, etc. to the content of the first pack. Those drivers who want to get the most out of their truck can opt for the level three suite that offers everything from the first two packs along with red two hooks, an ARB winch-capable front bumper, chase rack, etc.
