The Ford Mustang is a great muscle car that offers big power and plenty of excitement. However, there’s no denying that it has been more about affordable thrills and comfort than mind-boggling horsepower figures. For monstrous outputs, buyers have opted for 650-hp Camaros and adrenaline-rushing Challengers that could make about 800 hp. Until now. This year, Ford brings its most striking and most powerful muscle car ever. Bow down to the 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500 that puts out 760 horsepower. What’s more, it offers the fastest street-legal acceleration (the quarter mile is covered in less than 11 seconds) and the biggest brakes of all American coupes to harness this power. Just like all other Mustangs, it offers impressive visuals. For all those who are looking to add more poise to this car’s appearance, performance, or both, there’s a wide range of 2020 Ford Mustang accessories and parts available in our store.
Giving this new ‘Stang its mega power is a 5.2-liter supercharged V8 that is based on the engine found in Ford’s another top-performer, the 526-hp GT350. Much was changed in this mill to achieve the massive output, including the transition from a flat-plane to cross-plane crank, stronger cylinder heads and engine block, and improved oil supply to the engine. The seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission this V8 is mated to is one-of-a-kind as well – it is the quickest-shifting tranny ever installed on a Mustang, capable of shifting at less than 100 milliseconds. The Shelby GT500 also got a revised suspension with lightweight coil springs. For enthusiasts who want more, there are special packages that add handling-focused 2020 Ford Mustang parts. Buyers can opt for the Handling Package with adjustable strut mounts and a more aerodynamic spoiler. The Carbon Fiber Track Package includes an adjustable wing and wheels made from this lightweight material, sticky track tires, and dive planes. If you want to go even further in your mods, browse our 2020 Ford Mustang accessories and parts selection.
Even more power from the factory comes with the limited-production 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500SE (Signature Edition) that churns out over 800 hp. Performance fanatics, hurry up: Ford makes only 100 examples available for purchase. The power boost comes courtesy of supercharger upgrades, and the SE-badged ‘Stang GT500 uses 93-octane pump gas. It also sports a lower suspension with revised components, including the springs and stabilizer bars. The automaker has beefed up the axle shafts for the driveline to handle an increased power. A new carbon fiber hood both boosts the car’s aggressive appeal and reduces the overall weight thanks to being 30 lb lighter.
While the GT500SE is the most powerful offering, the limited-production 2020 Shelby GT350R is more of a track weapon. For starters, its 5.2-liter V8 provides a higher redline of 8,200 rpm. To the joy of all those who demand stick shifts, this high-revving engine is matched with the one and only 6-speed manual. The R version of the GT350 has a bunch of standard carbon fiber parts from rims to the rear wing, and further reduction in mass is achieved through the removal of the resonator and rear seats. Handling is improved thanks to recalibrated suspension and power steering, new steering rack, and the GT500-sourced steering knuckle.
The rest of the sixth-generation Mustang lineup received insignificant changes this year that include slight revisions of exterior color options and equipment. As before, there are a number of models for any taste and need as well as the availability of all-wheel drive. Apart from the high-power V8 offered in two states of tune, there are two other engine options, namely a 2.3-liter 310-hp I4 and a 5.0-liter 460-hp V8. Those who enjoy the thrills of stick shifts will be fine with a 6-speed manual, while for others, there’s a 10-speed automatic with paddle shifters. All Mustangs except for AWD variants use an exclusive combination of a longitudinally mounted engine and rear-wheel drive. The long-rumored hybrid-powered Mustang, which could be dubbed Mach 1, is expected to debut this year.
There is a big HP and price gap between the two engines, which has recently been filled with the new 2.3L High Performance Package. It ups the power ante of the entry-level EcoBoost to 330 hp, versus the standard 310 hp. Additional 20 ponies are the result of fitting a high-performance cylinder head, a bigger turbo compressor, and a larger radiator to cool everything down. The special pack also got some parts from the GT Performance Package, including an alloy strut tower brace and more capable brakes, plus a shorter rear axle ratio and the newly tuned power steering.
As important as Carroll Shelby’s name is to Mustang enthusiasts and the model itself, there are a few special edition versions paying tribute to the famous racer and designer. The 2020 Shelby Super Snake Bold Edition strikes with bright exterior colors and interior accents. Under the scooped hood, there’s a 5.0-liter V8 that puts out a whopping 825 horsepower. Only 30 copies of this model are available. The Shelby Heritage Edition is an appearance pack for the GT350 and the more hardcore GT350R. Launched to celebrate the GT350’s 55-year heritage, the limited-edition version wears the historic white-and-blue race livery similar to that of the original competition car built by Shelby and tested by Ken Miles in 1965.
