The BMW X6 luxury crossover received its last significant update in 2014 when the second generation of the model was introduced. Today, it is clear that BMW takes a step further with this Sports Activity Coupe launching its third generation for the 2020 model year. It is no surprise that the new X6 borrows many visual cues from the BMW X5. However, it also received some cues from new 8 Series models. Compared to the outgoing version, the newbie is an inch longer and 0.6 inch wider. Its wheelbase was also extended by 1.6 inches, while the roofline was lowered by 0.7 inch. On the outside, the 2020 BMW X6 received a fastback hatch shape and larger kidney grille with fewer and thicker chrome-plated vertical bars and active grille shutters. The headlights follow the same design language of the X5 model. Lower air intakes feature a hexagonal mesh. If compared to the previous model, the new X6 has much slimmer tail lights. Look closely in the back, you'll notice the roof has a double-bubble design, which maximizes rear seat headroom.
Inside, buyers will be glad to find the latest version of BMW iDrive, an infotainment system that features a 12.3’’ touchscreen, and an instrument cluster display of the same size. The model also got an all-new large panoramic roof with a Sky Lounge feature. The 2020 BMW X6 is available with two engines: a 3.0 L turbo I-6 generating 335 HP and 4.4 L twin-turbo V8 pushing out 523 HP. Both engines are mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox. To improve handling, the automaker equipped its new crossover with the Dynamic Handling package that brings Integral Active Steering and active roll stabilization. The vehicle is also available with an active air suspension. BMW offers the Off-Road package for those who want more off-road capability.
Of course, the 2020 BMW X6 M50i comes with the more powerful engine – the 523-hp V8 which pushes it to 60 mph in a bit more than 4 seconds – while being all about style. Up front, it gets an oversized kidney grille flanked by the ultra-stylish LED lights with blue lasers for the high beams. Big air intakes below complete the aggressive look of the front fascia. Out back, the X6's high-performance trim sports sleek thin tail lights and large quad exhaust pipes. The M Sport body kit comes standard.
BMW’s 2020 X6 M offers the most power. It comes from the tuned version of the 4.4 L V8, which puts out 600 hp in the “regular” form and 617 hp if the Competition package is picked. In both cases, there’s 553 lb-ft of torque available already at 1800 rpm and up to 5860 rpm. With this strong of an engine and performance perks such as oil coolers, big brakes that offer adjustable brake feel, extra bracing, and massive performance tires, the X6 M is more than ready for track days. A multitude of M Performance upgrades are available for this model, which include staggered wheels and plenty of carbon fiber bits inside and out.
