In both cases, peak torque is 553 lb-ft, and it is readily available from as low as 1800 to 5860 rpm. An 8-speed Steptronic automatic executes the shifts, and AWD is available. With a 155 mph top speed (177 mph with the M Driver's pack) and a 0-60 mph time of 3.8 seconds, the new X5 M is blisteringly fast for a crossover. Its track-day bona fides are supported by additional braces, oil coolers, optional staggered wheels, grippy rubber, and big brakes. Those who opt for the 2020 X5 M can choose from a host of M Performance upgrades including a sport steering wheel, a more aerodynamic spoiler and rear diffuser, and carbon fiber exterior accessories.

The new 2020 BMW X5 xDrive45e plug-in hybrid is a welcome addition for those who prefer greener driving. Power for it comes from a 3.0-liter twin-turbo I6 which teams with an electric motor to produce a total of 394 hp and 443 lb.-ft. A 24 kWh battery pack provides quite a lengthy all-electric driving range of up to 50 miles (for a European version). U.S. specs are expected to be largely the same. In an electric mode, the PHEV can accelerate to 84 mph max, while kicking the gasoline engine in brings a top speed of 146 mph. Like other quiet electric and hybrid vehicles, the xDrive45e comes with acoustic pedestrian warning.

Both the base xDrive40i and the upmarket xDrive50i luxury SUVs carry over this year. They are powered by the 3.0-liter 335-hp I6 and 4.4-liter 456-hp V8, respectively, and both utilize an 8-speed automatic transmission and AWD.
