The 2020 BMW 5-Series got an all-new M5 Edition, a boost in power for its M550i version, and a handful of accessories redesigned for a fresher look. The current-generation 5-Series was released in 2016. Since that time, it has received no major updates, so it's time for a mid-cycle facelift. For this year, the model got slight changes including some distinctive 2020 BMW 5-Series accessories that bring it more in line with the company’s most recent vehicles. Most of previously available engines carry over, with the N63 updated to add more horsepower. The N63 is a twin-turbocharged 4.4 L V8 engine found in the M550i. It provides the luxury car with 523 HP, which is a 68 HP increase over the previous version. The BMW 530e iPerformance plug-in hybrid got a wireless battery charger for 2020. The ground pad replenishes a depleted 9.2 kW battery pack in 3,5 hours. On a full charge, the hybrid sedan can go up to 16 miles. Its electrified powertrain uses a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder as the main power source and produces a combined 248 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque.
The biggest news for this year is the addition of the M5 Edition 35 years to the lineup. Based on the well-known M5 Competition, it was designed to celebrate the birth of the M model. On the mechanical side, the newcomer shares the powertrain with the M5 Competition. It offers the same 617 HP and can reach 60 mph in just 3.1 seconds. The maximum speed is also limited to 189 mph. While the new edition has the same wheelbase and powertrain as the model it is based on, it received an impressive range of visual changes with many new or revised 2020 BMW 5-Series parts inside and out. Thus, the newbie runs on 20-inch alloy Y-spoke wheels available in Graphite Grey. To match the wheels, brake calipers are high gloss back.
The new BMW offering has a paint job in Frozen Dark Grey II metallic paint that was infused with pigments specifically to give it a silky look. The model also lacks a badge on its trunk. The exterior design language finds its way inside with Merino black M sport seats, the center console covered by carbon fiber combined with gold anodized aluminum, and other parts in a dark color. The seats have contrasting beige stitching. Behind the steering wheel, you will find a new Live Cockpit Professional infotainment screen. The iDrive operating system includes a variety of driver aids and can be controlled through voice commands, gesture controls, touchscreen, or controls located on the steering wheel. Just like other BMW vehicles, this sedan features a number of safety technologies.
