Instead of playing it safe and keeping this crucially important SUV basically as it is, Toyota has chosen a radical way. The all-new fifth-generation 2019 Toyota RAV4 debuted at the 2018 New York Auto Show redesigned from the ground up. It got a rugged new look, fresh tech, and new powertrain, while riding on a completely different, twice stiffer Toyota Next-Generation Architecture (TNGA).

The somewhat conservative appearance of the previous-gen RAV4 has gone for good. The all-new RAV4 has a whole more powerful stance and a bolder design that obviously borrowed some cues from the outstanding FT-AC Concept. The 2019 Toyota RAV4 boasts an aggressive front end, robust shoulder line, and a more dynamic profile. It also has wider tracks, rides on a 1.2-inch longer wheelbase and sits half-inch higher than the outgoing model, while being a bit shorter in the overall length. Front and rear overhangs have been shortened for better performance on rugged terrain.

The available powertrains for the 2019 RAV4 include a carryover combination of a Dynamic Force 2.5-liter I4 and an 8-speed automatic as well as an all-new hybrid setup that uses Toyota Hybrid System II syncing with the same four-cylinder and an electronically-controlled CVT. For the first time, Toyota employs Dynamic Torque Vectoring All-Wheel Drive that offers the ability to disconnect the rear driveline. This system can be had on higher-grade non-hybrid RAV4s and can transfer half of the available torque to the rear wheels and distribute it between them for maximum traction. For the times when AWD is not needed, the rear axle can be disconnected by means of the world’s first ratchet-type dog clutches to provide fuel savings, reduce vibration and friction, and minimize energy loss. Two other AWD systems are offered for lower-trim vehicles – basic models do not have torque vectoring, while hybrids feature the AWD-i system that can send 30% more of the engine power to the rear than before. For better traction on snowy, rocky, sandy and muddy surfaces, all AWD models except for gas-electric ones get Multi-Terrain Select.

For this year, the Platinum trim has been dropped, while the XSE Hybrid is the all-new addition, which Toyota claims to be the sportiest RAV4 ever built and the fastest and best-handling model in the lineup. It offers two-tone exterior with a black roof combined with various body paint shades, blacked-out wheels, and sport-tuned suspension. The Adventure trim has a more aggressive appearance than other models and stands apart from the rest of the lineup with its roof rails and big fender flares. The interior of the 2019 Toyota RAV4 looks more modern and gets a more ergonomic design with a bigger console. The touchscreen is larger as well, measuring 7 or 8 inches. The Entune multimedia system supports Apple CarPlay but does not offer Android Auto compatibility. Like other current Toyota offerings, the 2019 RAV4 features the Toyota Safety Sense suite of systems as standard. Among some of the options, there are heated and ventilated seats, up to five USB ports, wireless phone charging, and 11-speaker audio.
