There are lots of hybrid cars that can be had with all-wheel drive these days. But not the Toyota Prius, which is regarded as a pioneer of hybrid technology. For the 2019 model year, the experts at Toyota have finally addressed this shortcoming. To the joy of those who live in snowy climates, the 2019 Prius is available with the AWD-e system, which makes it one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles with all-wheel drive money can buy. While regular AWD systems employ mechanical parts to connect the transmission and axles, “e” in the system's designation hints at its electric nature. The electric motor drives the rear axle on demand, from launch to 6 mph when most traction is needed and at speeds up to 43 mph. When extra traction is not required, AWD-e works in FWD mode to save gas. Fuel economy is estimated at an impressive 50 mpg in a combined cycle.
The motor draws juice from a new nickel-hydride battery engineered with cold-weather operating conditions in mind. The system used in the Prius is more compact than the one found in other Toyota vehicles, so the interior space remains the same. Neatly packed beneath the back seat area, the motor allows for 62.7 cubes of space for cargo with the rear seats folded, which is not a big reduction compared to other Prius models' 65.5 cubes. Like other members of the lineup, the Prius AWD-e features Hybrid Synergy Drive. It employs a 1.8-liter 95-hp I4 and 2 motor-generators and sends power through a CVT. On a regular Prius, the total output of this system is rated at 121 hp, while stepping up to the all-wheel-drive model adds 7 hp plus 40 lb.-ft. of torque.
Power at all four wheels is certainly the biggest news, but there are other changes made as part of the mid-cycle refresh of the fourth generation. The exterior was updated with sleeker-looking 2019 Toyota Prius parts and accessories, including revised bumpers, rear hatch, and refreshed LED headlight and tail light designs. New wheel and color options are on offer, too. This model year also brings a different trim level naming strategy. Toyota has ditched a numerical nomenclature in favor of more conventional lettering. The new trim level lineup includes L Eco, LE, XLE, and Limited models. Starting in this model year, all of them have the Toyota Safety Sense P array of driver assist features. Interior tweaks are subtle and include black trim accents and two extra USB ports, among other minor changes.
