The all-new 2019 Ram 3500 Heavy Duty that made its debut at the auto show in Detroit is a big newsmaker. Not only it is the most powerful towing machine in its segment thanks to a groundbreaking 1,000 pound-feet of torque, it also sets new benchmarks for technology and luxury. Underpinning this hard-working rig is a redesigned frame that is almost entirely constructed of high-strength steel. Further increasing its torsional rigidity are hydroformed major rails, fully boxed rear rails, and 6 crossmembers. Although the new 3500HD is a much more capable pickup truck, it sheds off 143 pounds thanks to an aluminum hood and lightweight materials used in its underpinnings and powerplant.

Three engine options are offered for the 2019 model year. Those who don’t actually need gargantuan towing and hauling power can opt for a carryover 6.4-liter gasoline V8. Like before, it develops 410 hp and 429 lb.-ft. and works in conjunction with an 8-speed automatic. Things get more interesting when you opt for an upgraded 6.7-liter turbodiesel I6 by Cummins. In its standard-output form, it makes 370 hp and 850 lb.-ft. But in its high-output configuration, this diesel engine delivers 400 hp and the aforementioned 1,000 lb.-ft. available already at 1,800 RPM. The Cummins has lost 60 pounds compared to last year’s version thanks to improvements like an engine block made from graphite iron, redesigned cast-iron cylinder head, forged conrods, hollow cam, and other lightweight parts. With the right equipment installed, the new Ram 3500 can pull as much as 35,100 pounds and offers a 7,680-pound payload capacity.

Suspending the rear wheels of the 2019 Ram 3500 HD is a familiar Hotchkiss setup with parallel leaf springs. Although, for more comfort and capability, this design can be replaced with air springs. The Active-Level air suspension can be put in a bed-lowering mode to make trailer hookup as easy as pie. Other technologies that simplify towing and trailering are a 360-degree camera with a trailer reverse guidance feature, trailer tire pressure monitoring system, and super-capable automatic braking that is claimed to work even with 35,000 pounds of the load towed behind. Overall, the new truck offers over a hundred safety and driver-assist systems. One more tech highlight is a giant 12-inch screen for the Uconnect 4C NAV infotainment.

As usual, a few limited-edition models are available. The Harvest Edition, available for chassis cab variants, is offered in blue and red exterior colors to meet a direct request from farmers. More traditional black and white body colors are available too. Apart from the new distinctive colors, the newcomer features chrome mirrors, side steps, door handles and grille, and polished aluminum wheels with the diameter of either 18 or 19.5 inches (depending on the version). The model also comes with a skid plate and big tow hooks in front. As for tech features, the Harvest Edition offers smartphone integration and 4G Wi-Fi connectivity. The new variant of the truck is available in regular cab and crew cab configurations with single and dual wheels in the rear.

The Ram 3500 Rodeo Edition is aimed at those looking for a luxurious, feature-packed heavy-duty pickup. It enhances both styling and functionality and is essentially the new top-of-the-line model. Based on the Laramie Longhorn, the Rodeo Edition takes its equipment up a notch by adding a trailering package, bed camera, air springs in the rear, skid plates, and a bed step. The exterior looks beefier with body-colored bumpers and side steps. Wheel options include 20-inch aluminum rims for models with single rear wheels and 17-inch ones for trucks with dually wheels. Inside the cabin, there is a two-tone upholstery and a suede headliner. Just like its half-ton sibling, the HD family offers the Lone Star edition geared toward Texas truck owners. The 2019 Ram 3500 Lone Star features a chromed-out front fascia and some trailering goodies, which include an electronic trailer brake controller, towing mirrors that extend the field of vision, and a Class 5 tow hitch. The Kentucky Derby Edition also adds some equipment that aids in towing. The air suspension can lower the bed and eliminate squat, while trailer braking increases towing safety. Maneuvering with a trailer hooked up is made easy thanks to tech like trailer-reverse guidance and active hitch grid lines. The interior abounds in leather surfaces, with wood and metal trim adding nice accents.
