After long years of absence from the U.S. market, the updated Ford Ranger makes a big comeback. Ford unveiled the 2019 Ranger in Detroit in January 2018. This compact pickup truck is not really meant for those who need a big and capable work machine, but it will definitely appeal to younger city dwellers. The Ranger is easier to park in a downtown public garage than the Ford F-150, and it offers better maneuverability in urban areas. Although, the new Ranger is also great for occasional towing. When properly equipped, it can pull up to 7,500 pounds, offering greater towing capacity than any other gas-powered mid-size pickup on the market. Higher trim levels come standard with a blind spot detection system for an easier and safer towing experience. Using taillight-housed radars, the system is able to monitor blind spots behind the trailer. The new tech detects the presence of vehicles in the next lane as well as draws the driver's attention to the vehicle backing out of a parking lot.
The new 2019 Ranger is available in Super Cab and Super Crew body configurations. There are several trim levels and special sport packages like the FX4. The vehicle features a unique box-frame construction with reduced body panel gaps; there are also some technical solutions helping to reduce wind noise. If compared to the Ranger built abroad for the foreign markets, the new model offers a different steering wheel, transmission shifter, and new optional wheel designs (17- and 18-inchers are available). The solid-steel front bumper with front-mounted tow hooks emphasizes off-road abilities. The new double-bulge hood and tailgate are made of aluminum, contributing to a decrease in gross weight and better fuel economy.
Under the hood, there is a 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder with a twin-scroll turbocharger, which is the same engine found in the Mustang. It is good for 270 hp and class-leading 310 lb-ft of torque — that's even more than V6-equipped mid-size pickup trucks can churn out. This engine is mated to a new Selectshift 10-speed automatic transmission (a manual one is not available). The FX4’s Terrain Management System includes four drive modes: normal, mud/ruts, sand, and grass/gravel/snow. There are many safety and comfort features such as emergency braking mode, rear view camera, pre-collision and lane-keep assists, adaptive cruise control, etc. as well as off-road drive assist technology working at minimum speed (just 1mph).
For the European market, Ford offers the 2019 Ranger Raptor. The announcement was made at the Gamescom trade fair since the model is included in Forza Horizon 4 video game. The new compact pickup truck is powered by a twin-turbo 2.0-liter diesel I4 engine capable of producing 210 hp. The smaller turbocharger operates at lower revs, and the larger unit comes into play at higher RPMs. A 10-speed automatic transmission allows the user to override it at any moment by pushing paddle shifters. The suspension system that features Fox shock absorbers with position-sensitive Damping is fine-tuned for off-road performance. The 2019 Ford Ranger Raptor is equipped with BFGoodrich all-terrain tires and front skid plate made of durable high-grade steel. Six driving modes are available, including Normal, Sport, various-terrain modes, and Baja which is perfect for high-speed off-roading. Inside, you can find the Sync 3 infotainment system that features an 8-inch touchscreen, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay. Raptor sports seats are wrapped in fine leather and soft, suede-like material with blue stitching. To distinguish the new Ranger Raptor from the standard model, designers equipped the vehicle with a unique grille with large “Ford” lettering, fenders made of composite material with air scoops and flares for accommodating larger tires and longer suspension travel. Besides performing their primary function, running boards can protect door panels from flying rocks.
According to Ford, over two-thirds of all Rangers sold are equipped with a styling package, so there are many options for those who want a cosmetically upgraded vehicle right from the factory. Truck shoppers love blacked-out looks, and the new Black Appearance package is designed for those who are after visual aggression. As evidenced by its name, it features a plethora of dark trim all around, including a black grille, rims, running boards, and more. Two other styling packs available for the 2019 Ranger are the Chrome one with shiny accents and the Sport Appearance Package which offers unique wheel designs and gray trim.
Another factory option is upgrading the Ranger with off-road chops. As many as three off-road packages are available, with each taking the truck’s performance on dirt roads to the next level. The Level 1 pack adds a leveling kit and Fox shocks while bringing a bolder look with 17-inch gray wheels and graphics. The Level 2 builds on the content of the previous-grade package and further sweetens the deal with upgraded tires, off-road fog lights, tow hooks, and engine tuning that ups the power count to 315 hp and 370 lb.-ft. of torque. In this configuration, the truck also gets a license plate frame made from stainless steel. If you want it all and even more, opt for the Level 3 bundle of equipment that adds a performance exhaust system, a chase rack, a front bumper that can accommodate a winch, and a 40’’ light bar.
