The BMW X5 is rightfully regarded as the automaker's most influential SUV. Before 1999, when the Bavarian manufacturer pulled the wraps off the X5, it had produced sedans, coupes, and wagons only. It was the X5 that marked BMW's first foray into the now-hot SUV market and originated the entire X family. For the 2019 model year, the Bavarian brand debuts the fourth generation of the well-known nameplate, dubbed G05. The 2019 BMW X5 rides on the new CLAR platform and offers a whole lot more technologies, while retaining the familiar look.

On the outside, there are no drastic changes that would differ the newly introduced X5 from the outgoing model. The corporate Kidney grille is oversized and has a singleframe surround. The slimmer and sharper headlights are placed farther to the sides, detached from the grille. Adaptive LED headlights are standard for this year, while laser lights are on the options list. At the back, the chunkier LED tail light design replaces the previous generation's L-shaped units. The hatch now has a two-section construction for easier loading of small-sized items. The shoulder line of the newly introduced X5 is more pronounced and the overall look is more rugged, which is emphasized by a slight increase in size. All in all, 2019 BMW X5 accessories and parts of the exterior create a muscular appearance and imposing posture. The new CLAR architecture added 1.1 inches to the overall length, which is now 194.3 inches, and 1.6 inches to the wheelbase, which now measures 117.1 inches. The new model is also 2.6 inches wider and sits a bit lower.

The interior is packed with luxury features and modern-day technologies. There are power adjustable heated seats up front (ventilated and massaging ones are payable extras), new shifter with an embedded Swarovski crystal, panoramic sunroof, heated/cooled cupholders, and many other 2019 BMW X5 accessories and parts that create an upscale and functional interior. The dashboard and center stack designs have been refreshed for this year and mimic those of the BMW 3 Series, 8 Series, and Z4. The instrument panel, named BMW Live Cockpit, is now fully digital. A full range of standard active safety features is gathered in the Active Driving Assistant package, including pre-collision, rear cross-traffic, and blind spot warnings. Stepping up to the Professional package adds some autonomous driving tech. Traffic Jam Assistant eases driving in monotonous situations, providing 30 seconds of automatic driving at low speeds and 7 seconds at higher speeds. It can also change lanes, back up, and park autonomously.

As for the 2019 BMW X5's powerplants, a few options are available at launch. U.S.-spec gasoline-fed versions are the xDrive40i and xDrive50i, packing a 3.0-liter 335-hp I4 and a bigger 4.4-liter 456-hp V8, respectively. Matching to both engines is an 8-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive with an optional locking rear diff. A diesel-powered SUV is on the list for Europe, equipped with a 3.0-liter turbodiesel I6. New for 2019 are standard adaptive dampers that offer comfort and sporty drive settings. The air suspension (both front and rear now) is optional, which can level the SUV automatically for sport and off-road driving.
