The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is a true jewel in the model lineup of the German automaker, shining with glory gained over decades. For generations, the S-Class sedan has been the flagship model of the manufacturer, recognized not only for its iconic design, but also for pioneering progressive technology, always staying at the forefront of innovation. Strong, athletic, and truly outstanding, the new 2018 Mercedes S-Class followed the league of its legendary family. It debuted in April 2017, taking on its all-time rival, the Audi A8, and at once impressed the audience with its brand-new technical features.

When it comes to design, the 2018 S-Class presents only minor aesthetic changes that can be spotted in revised head- and tail lights and rear bumper. The tail lights now feature OLED technology, while AMG models boast the new impressive vertical-bar Panamericana grille design taken from the AMG GT3 racing car. Inside, the model features two 12.3-inch infotainment screens and a three-spoke steering wheel with updated controls. As always, every part of the S-Class’ cabin is developed to deliver comfort and stimulate the senses. Upping the luxury level of the 2018 Mercedes S-Class are opulent Exclusive Editions for coupe and cabriolet. The special edition cars feature unique shades of red and silver exterior paint, sit on twin-spoke alloy 19-inchers, and boast LED adaptive headlights adorned with Swarovski crystals. The luxurious interior package includes Nappa leather perforated and diamond stitched upholstery, leather-finished instrument panel, and light brown Asian hardwood trim.

The 2018 Mercedes S-Class received the advanced electronic architecture first introduced on the E-Class, and adopted the most powerful engine range produced by Mercedes. For instance, the M 256 inline 6-cylinder gasoline motor upgraded with an integrated starter-alternator and an electric compressor is able to deliver the power of a V8, yet retaining the consumption of a 6-cylinder. Another impressive unit is a 4.0L V8 biturbo cranking out 463 bhp that came to replace a 4.7-liter engine. The V8 engine fitted to the S63 as well as E63 sedans and wagons was downsized as well, now displacing 4.0 liters instead of the previous 5.5 liters. The new engine delivers a power gain over the previous unit, now making 603 hp instead of 557. Two-door versions of the 2018 S-Class (S450 coupe and cabriolet) dropped V6 power, now available with eight- and twelve-cylinder engines. As for the transmission, the previous 7-speed automatic was replaced with an AMG-branded 9-speed multi-clutch auto. Powertrain-wise, the big news is the addition of an AMG-sourced 621-horsepower V12 engine to the 2018 Mercedes-Maybach S650 sedan. Its convertible-bodied sibling received the same engine last year.

The hybrid version of the 2018 S-Class (the Mercedes-Benz S 560e) is available as well. It is powered by a combination of a 3.0-liter 367-hp V6 and a 90 kW electric motor contained within a 9-speed automatic. The plug-in hybrid has a smaller battery pack than the previous model, which is yet more capable thanks to improved chemical composition. The Mercedes S 560e is claimed to provide an electric range of nearly 30 miles. More interesting changes to the S-Class range concern assistance and autonomous driving features. The car is packed with Distance Assist Distronic, Speed Limit, Steering, Lane Change and Parking Assist. Basically, the S-Class is now able to slow down automatically, park itself and avoid crashes in the most efficient way. There are certain improvements to the Magic Body Control suspension which is offered as an option: the addition of a new stereoscopic camera helps scan the road ahead more effectively, which results in more accurate adjustments to the suspension. Overall, the 2018 Mercedes S-Class is the new generation vehicle, boasting truly astonishing modern technology.
