The Mercedes-Benz G-Class, or G-Wagen, has been around since 1979, originally introduced as a civilian version of a rugged military machine. During all this time, there have only been mild refreshments, aimed at keeping this old-school 4x4 up to date. Its design has achieved the iconic status that few modern vehicles can boast, and it still doesn't seem to need any major makeover. It comes as no surprise that the 2018 Mercedes-Benz G-Class retained its distinctive boxy shape, with the body work given no essential changes. The only apparent visual update is the width - the new G-Class grew four inches wider, which added more interior space while retaining the classic front end look. Those who need more spice can opt for the new Designo Manufaktur Edition, which offers a host of luxurious appointments both inside and out. Externally, there are unique paint finishes that give the G-Class a more sophisticated styling expression. The interior strikes with contrasting accents, including black Nappa leather with red stitching, two-tone steering wheel, and bright red seat belts.
There is one more option for customers who seek opulence – the Mercedes-AMG Exclusive Edition available for G65 and G63 models. Setting the two apart is a special twin-spoke wheel design – limited-run vehicles roll on 21'' alloy wheels finished in matte black. Another distinction is an optional AMG Monza grey magno exterior paint. Inside, there are two-tone leather surfaces complemented with carbon fiber or piano lacquer accents. Giving power to this luxury-on-wheels is a mammoth 6.0L twin-turbo V8 rated at 621 hp or a smaller 5.5L V8 fed by two turbos as well and delivering 563 hp. The 2018 Mercedes-AMG G65 Final Edition is customers' last chance at the G65 model – the automaker says goodbye to its most expensive SUV. The outgoing vehicle is available in just 65 units that come exclusive with 21-inch twin-spoke wheels built from light alloy, silver-colored calipers, black AMG Sport decals, and matte bronze trim on the front fascia.
However, there are many important changes under the skin that aim to improve handling and stability. The new Geländewagen was moved to a tweaked platform that sliced a few hundred pounds off the vehicle thanks to extensive use of aluminum and high-strength steel. A wider chassis allowed for much needed suspension improvements aimed at better stability on and off the road, more control in turns, and greater comfort. The electromechanical steering system came to replace the hydraulically assisted design. And a modern electronic architecture allows for the latest infotainment and driver-assist technologies. The core models of the G-Class, the G550 and AMG G63, have a 4.0L twin-turbo V8 as a source of power, which is sent to all four wheels via a 9-speed automatic. AMG-branded versions keep a 7-speed transmission.
