The 2018 5-Series represents the seventh generation of BMW's luxury sedan that was unveiled late in 2016. Last year, the redesigned 5er got a lighter construction, more efficient powertrains, and improved tech. The new car dropped 137 pounds off its weight compared to the sixth generation thanks to an extensive use of aluminum, magnesium, and high-strength steel. A lightweight yet stiff body, newly designed chassis, even weight distribution, and low center of gravity are all combined to allow for more dynamic driving. Essentially, the 2018 5-Series took a lot of exterior design cues and technologies from the 7-Series and teamed them with BMW's outstanding new engines that were first used on the 2016 3er.

The 2018 BMW 5-Series lineup starts with the base 530i model. It uses a 2.0L turbocharged inline four that makes 248 hp and can get the car from zero to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds. A more powerful 540i is motivated by a 3.0L inline six capable of 335 hp. Both come with rear-wheel drive as standard and can be had with BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive system. And both have the sole transmission – an 8-speed automatic. For 2018, several new models are added, including the high-performance M550i xDrive as well as the 530e plug-in hybrid (the sixth representative of the iPerformance lineup). The latter combines a 2.0L twin-turbo four and an electric motor, providing the overall hybrid system output of 248 hp. The new M550i xDrive is the fastest 5er yet – its jaw-dropping 4.4L twin-turbocharged V8 provides 456 hp, hitting 60 mph in as little as 3.9 seconds. You can expect even more from the F90 M5 coming complete with the Competition Package. It features a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with over 600 hp sent to the wheels through a specifically tuned 8-speed ZF automatic. Power goes to all four wheels and allows the new model to get to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds, which is the best acceleration time for a BMW car ever. The 5-Series with the Competition Package sits on revised suspension. The last new member is the 540d xDrive with diesel power and AWD. It is equipped with a 3.0-liter turbodiesel I6 making 261 hp, which, like other variants, is mated to an 8-speed automatic.

Also new for 2018 is a 5er-based BMW ALPINA D5 S, a high-performance sedan or touring (wagon) that is claimed to be the world's fastest diesel-powered production car. It uses a 3.0-liter I6 teamed with permanent two-stage turbocharging technology to churn out 388 hp sent to all four wheels. 590 lb.-ft of max torque are well-mated to an 8-speed automatic fitted with ALPINA SWITCH-TRONIC. Sharp handling is provided by a combination of Active Steering, Adaptive Drive, and ALPINA sport-tuned suspension with electronically controlled dampers.

Inside, the 2018 5-Series offers a full suite of infotainment tech and driver assistance systems. There's and active cruise control with a stop and go function, traffic jam / lane keep assists, semi-autonomous steering, lane departure warning, remote-control parking, and more. BMW's iDrive multimedia system is controlled via a 10.3-inch touchscreen display. Gesture control allows for changing the volume, A/C settings, and radio stations by simply waving your fingers.
