The original Audi S4 was a high-performance version of the Audi 100 model. In 1997, it underwent a significant redo and since then has been based on the A4. An eight-speed Tiptronic automatic gearbox sends most of the torque to the rear wheels through a permanent all-wheel-drive system. The Tiptronic is the only transmission option, which means that Audi has discontinued the previous standard six-speed manual.

At the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show, Audi unveiled a welcome addition to the S4 lineup – the 2018 RS4 Avant, a 450-horsepower wagon that can manage a zero-to-62-mph run in 4.1 seconds and reach a top speed of 155 mph, or 174 mph when equipped with the RS Dynamic package. These impressive characteristics are achieved by a 2.9-liter biturbo V6 that can churn out 444 hp and is bolted to a sport-tuned 8-speed Tiptronic automatic. The new car is also 176 lb lighter than the outgoing model and 17% more fuel-savvy. The 2018 Audi RS4 Avant is fast and looks fast, featuring wide fenders, edgy lights, and aggressive honeycomb front elements.

Unlike its less powerful counterpart, the 2018 S4 is available only in a sedan body form.
