The R8 was launched in 2006 as Audi’s flagship sports car and Lamborghini Gallardo’s counterpart. But while the Gallardo has always been a track-oriented vehicle, the Audi R8 provides enough comfort and luxury for outstanding everyday driving experience. The Gallardo was discontinued in 2014, so the ongoing R8’s second generation shares the platform and a majority of mechanical features with the Huracán, Lamborghini’s new supercar. But unlike the latter, the Audi R8 didn't come with rear-wheel drive before. Until 2017, when the long-rumored 2018 Audi R8 V10 RWS (stands for Rear Wheel Series) was introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show. This hand-built drift machine offering unmatched rear-drive fun is available in just 999 units. Equipped with a 5.2-liter 540-hp V10 well-mated to a 7-speed automatic, it makes a 0-62 sprint in 3.7 (coupe) and 3.8 (Spyder) seconds. The regular R8 is offered in two body forms as well - a two-seat coupe and convertible, marketed as the R8 Spyder. Both variants measure 104.4 inches between the wheels and feature an aggressive design with Audi’s signature side blades and mesh grille. The Audi R8 Coupe has a front trunk and a small cargo area behind the seats with 8 cubic-feet capacity combined. The Spyder’s cargo area is limited to tiny 4 cubic feet.
For 2018, the Audi R8 received a range of standard features, the Audi Sport badge on the front grille, and slight interior updates. The 2018 R8 is now the first Audi that offers laser-enhanced high-beam headlights as standard equipment. Each headlight includes a set of laser diodes that are controller by the laser module and emit a blue laser beam that is converted into a white one. The laser module is activated at the speed of 40 mph and more and works in conjunction with LED headlights. What’s more, the new R8 features a standard smartphone interface.
From the performance standpoint, the 2018 Audi R8 was carried over from the previous year widely unchanged. Both the Coupe and Spyder variants are powered by a 5.2-liter naturally aspirated V10 engine with a dual fuel injection system that can switch between port and direct injection depending on the current driving situation. The 2018 Audi R8 is available in two trim levels, namely the V10 and the V10 Plus. Aside from larger wheels and a longer list of technology features, the V10 Plus model gets a sport-tuned suspension and exhaust, as well as carbon-ceramic brakes and a 70-horsepower output boost. So, while the base V10 produces 540 horsepower and gets to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds, the Plus trim packs impressive 610 horsepower and does a zero to sixty run in 3.1 seconds. All-wheel drive and a seven-speed automated manual gearbox come standard for all 2018 R8s.
Just like its Lamborghini sibling, the R8 is an outstanding sports car that provides thrilling driving experience, both on the racetrack and on city roads. It possesses a strong character and immediately grabs attention for its unique styling. That’s why aftermarket 2018 Audi R8 parts and accessories we offer are intended not to change its personality, but to make it shine even brighter.
