For the 2018 model year, Audi has refreshed its A5 lineup by introducing the second-generation RS5 and the updated A5 Sportback. The Audi A5 Sportback went on sale in Europe in 2009, however, its release in the U.S. was scheduled for the early 2017 as the 2018 year model. And while the A5 Sportback is a complete newcomer to the North American market, the next-generation Audi RS5 has been awaited by a large following of dedicated fans. The 2018 Audi RS5 made its debut at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show with its new design and even more power.
The A5 Sportback and RS5 appeal to different audiences. The A5 Sportback was designed to combine the elegance of a coupe and the convenience of a hatchback, featuring a fastback-like roofline and four frameless doors. Additionally, many of Audi A5 Sportback accessories and parts are shared with the A4, which brought the comfort of this renowned sedan to the A5 family. What certainly differs the A5 Sportback from its A4 brother is 17 cubic feet cargo space which can be expanded to 46 cubic feet thanks to fold-down second-row seats. The 2018 Audi A5 Sportback is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged and intercooled four-cylinder direct injection engine, which takes the car from 0 to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds. The engine is coupled with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and Audi’s famous Quattro all-wheel drive, which splits torque 40/60 between the front and rear wheels in the default setup.
The RS5 is a flagship sports car with aggressive RS Coupe styling and impressive horsepower and torque. 2018 Audi RS5 accessories and parts were optimized for enhanced performance and efficiency, while making the second-generation model 132 lbs lighter than the previous one. It features a carbon fiber roof which helps cut the weight. The new V6 engine instead of the old V8 helps keep the weight down as well. The 2018 Audi RS5 shares a 2.9-liter 444-horsepower V6 biturbo engine with the Porsche Panamera. The engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox and Quattro permanent all-wheel drive. The RS5 makes a 0-60 mph run in 3.9 seconds. The 2018 Audi A5 Cabriolet 2.0T Quattro is 55 lbs lighter, and thus 0,5 seconds quicker than its Coupe version. Its soft top folds in 15 seconds and can be closed in 18 seconds at speeds up to 31 mph. As an option, the Audi A5 Cabriolet may be powered with a 3.0-liter twin turbo V6 good for 354 horsepower.
The 2018 Audi A5 Sportback and Audi RS5 interiors set high standards in ergonomics, innovation, style, and comfort. Both vehicles are equipped with Virtual Cockpit, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster that displays the main driving information, including fuel consumption, mileage, tachometer and speedometer readings, and also gives access to navigation, communication, media and on-demand information. The latest-generation MMI operating system features handwriting- and voice-recognition technology, which provides easy access to a wide range of vehicle functions.
