For 2017, the Ram 1500 half-ton pickup truck offers a broad range of minor updates. The Outdoorsman trim was discontinued and some of its highlight features were scattered between other grades. A 6-speed automatic transmission option was dropped too, so now the truck can be fitted with an 8-speed automatic only. For 2017, all versions of the truck received a 5-micron cabin air filter. The 1500 Rebel trim now offers remote start, anti-spin differential, rear backup camera, security alarm, automatic temperature control, rear park assist, premium gauge cluster, media hub, and the Uconnect 8.4 infotainment system, all as standard. The Laramie Longhorn grade received LED bed lighting, rain-sensing wipers, keyless start, and SmartBeam. The Bighorn model now offers automatic temperature control, while the Sport got security alarm and remote start features.

The standard engine for the 2017 Ram 1500 is a 3.6 L V6 that develops 306 hp. Optional on most grades and standard on Limited, Sport, and Laramie Longhorn trims is a 5.7 L V8 good for 395 hp. The HFE version utilizes a 3.0 L turbodiesel V6 capable of 240 hp. An 8-speed automatic controlled via a rotary knob placed on the instrument panel is standard for all power units. RWD and AWD layout options are offered. The Ram 1500 provides decent fuel economy for a pickup of its size and capability – the base engine returns 20 mpg combined, while the optional V8 provides 17 mpg. As the name implies, the HFE (high fuel economy) grade is the most fuel-efficient one, returning up to 24 mpg combined. The base model can tow up to 7,610 lb, while diesel variants raise the number up to 9,210 lb. The V8 gives the truck the towing capacity of 10,640 lb. The payload capacity for a gas V6 tops out at 1,890 lb, while diesel and gas V8 versions provide 1,600 lb and 1,800 lb, respectively.

The base trim named the Tradesman sits on 17” steel wheels and offers automatic headlights, black grille, bumpers and door handles, spray-in bedliner, locking tailgate, rear backlight, Class IV receiver hitch, and 7-pin wiring harness. Inside, it features a 6-speaker sound system, air conditioning, tilt steering, cruise control, vinyl floor covering and upholstery, and USB port.
