At launch, the 2017 5-Series could be had as either the 530i or 540i model. Both offer standard rear-wheel drive and optional xDrive (AWD). BMW has revised the engine lineup, dropping the V8, diesel, and hybrid options and adding two new turbocharged engines – a 2.0-liter 248-hp four-cylinder and 3.0-liter 335-hp inline-six. Both are backed by an eight-speed automatic transmission. The suspension and steering systems received updates as well in order to provide precise feedback and better dynamics. In front, there is a new double wishbone design, while the rear received a five-link setup. Optional adaptive dampers are meant to transform the car from a quiet family hauler to athletic performer. The Integral Active Steering system is available, which gives the new 5er excellent stability on a highway along with the right amount of agility and responsiveness on city roads.

The 2017 BMW 5-Series put on new sheetmetal that gave it a more athletic stance. The kidney grille, headlights, and tail lights are bigger now; a remodeled front bumper and active grille shutters made the new 5-Series more aerodynamically efficient. Inside the cabin, there are striking updates to safety and convenience features. As for the techno sphere, there's the new iDrive multimedia interface with a big 10.3” touchscreen and gesture sensing technology. The optional head-up display is 75% bigger than before. A full suite of active safety systems includes lane keep and traffic jam assist technologies, adaptive cruise control with a stop-and-go-feature, blind spot monitoring, BMW's Active Driving Assistant, lane departure warning, and more.
