With the introduction of the Silverado and Sierra siblings for the 1999 model year, GM made a strong statement and brought to the table a pair of serious competitors to the already established trucks by Ford and Chrysler. However, the two quickly caught up and inspired General Motors for another leap, bringing fully redesigned 1500s in 2006 and upgraded heavy-duty models that were introduced two years later. For the 2009 model year, shoppers who consider GMC’s full-size pickup trucks have quite a lot of novelties to opt for.
Along with the mainstream Sierra 1500, which was refreshed externally and upgraded inside, GMC adds the redesigned hybrid version. Unlike the first-gen Hybrid that was more of a marketing trick rather than an actual fuel-saving technique, the rethought truck features a two-mode continuously variable transmission working with a 6.0-liter V-8 engine and two AC permanent-magnet electric motors offering as many as 332 horsepower in total. Provided with GM’s Active Fuel Management, the car shows the best fuel economy in its class, capable of going 20 miles on a gallon in both city and highway regimes, according to the EPA rating.
Among heavy-duty models, a selection of changes is even more impressive. With the 2500 and 3500 HD finally switching to the new GMT900 platform, both performance and looks were substantially improved. The gluttonous 8.1-liter big-block V8 was dropped, but instead, a 6.0-liter Vortec V8 underwent a mild redesign adding to its power and torque figures. Both of the available automatic transmissions are also new. To resolve the all-time issue with interior quality, GMC concentrated quite a lot of their efforts on improving cabin internals. They have managed to end up with a decently looking interior of the HD lineup and even more pleasant surrounding inside light-duty models, especially those wearing the Sierra Denali badge.
GMC Sierra pickups and their Silverado twins have always been good vehicles to live with. One of the main factors contributing to this is excellent dependability of GM trucks.
