For the 2007 model year, GM introduced the fully redesigned Sierra 1500. It was the second-generation model, which greatly differed from the first-gen Sierra and featured a new body, improved build quality, and more refined cabin. There were many technical enhancements such as a stronger frame contributing to higher towing capacity, stronger engines, rack-and-pinion setup of the steering system, and better safety thanks to side curtain airbags and stability control. The 2007 GMC Sierra 1500 was offered with a choice of three cab styles – the Regular, Extended, and Crew cabs and three bed lengths – a short, standard, and long one. While regular-cab Sierras were marketed with standard and long beds, extended-cab models were available with all bed lengths, and crew-cab versions were equipped with a short bed only.

The engine lineup for most trim levels included a 4.3L V6 rated at 195 hp and mightier V8 motors (4.8L, 5.3L, and 6.0L) developing from 295 to 367 hp. The Sierra Denali was available with the most powerful 6.2L V8 making 403 hp. This motor can also be found in the 2007 Cadillac Escalade and LTZ trim of the Sierra's corporate sibling, the Chevy Silverado. Moreover, GM offered different variations of the 5.3L engine – there were four gasoline and flex-fuel models featuring either an iron or aluminum block. Also, this engine, along with the 6.0L motor, used Active Fuel Management technology to save gasoline. Unfortunately, almost all of these units were coupled with a bit outdated four-speed automatic transmission, except for the 6.2-liter one, which received a superb six-speed gearbox. The 4-speed AT operates nice most of the time, but it can be slow to downshift when the road situation requires more power.

Even the lowest Work trim included the basics: the air conditioning system (could be missed in the regular-cab versions), tilt steering wheel, vinyl upholstery, OnStar telematics, and 40/20/40-split front bench seat. The SLE trim was divided into SLE1 and SLE2 levels. The former included alloy wheels, full power accessories, keyless entry system, cruise control, and auto-dimming rearview mirror. The latter added dual-zone automatic climate control, front bucket seats, and audio controls on the steering wheel. The upper SLT trim offered a unique dash and door panel treatment featuring lustrous wood grain and stylish metallic accents. Also, this trim included heated front seats, leather upholstery, rain sensor, Bose audio system, and some other amenities. The top Denali version was offered with a navigation system, unique interior trim, larger wheels, remote start, and a sunroof.

In general, the 2007 Sierra was greatly improved if compared to the previous model years. The interior definitely became more enjoyable and comfortable.
