A key member of Mazda's RX family of vehicles outfitted with rotary engines and a sporty profile, the RX-8 made its debut in the US market for the 2004 model year. When it premiered, the Mazda RX-8 received a burst of attention due to its smooth yet aggressive styled parts and also because of the aforementioned twin rotary engine. The RX-8 was designated to go head-to-head with models such as the Nissan 350Z and seemingly had an advantage due to the superior amount of room inside the model, since the RX-8 featured a usable backseat. As for the powertrain, the RX-8 used a 1.3L twin rotary good for approximately 230 horsepower and 150 pounds-per-foot of torque. Initially, the engine was mated to a four-speed automatic transmission.
Mazda did not order too many updates for the RX-8 parts second year of production. Aside from the inclusion of a satellite-radio ready head unit, the RX-8 was left virtually untouched for 2005. However, for 2006, the RX-8 no longer sported a four-speed automatic transmission. Instead, the gearbox was upgraded to a new six-speed automatic transmission with paddle-shifters. During the vehicle's first few years, Mazda broke down the RX-8's separate trim levels into distinctive packages that came with groupings of options. Automatic versions of the RX-8 displayed air conditioning, power accessories, and 16" wheels. Those with a manual transmission showcased a sportier disposition thanks to 18" wheels, a limited-slip differential, and a sport-tuned suspension. Packages included the Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring. Sport models offered xenon HID headlights, stability control, traction control, and foglights; Touring variants added a sunroof, automatic-dimming mirrors, and a premium Bose stereo; Grand Touring packages provided a six-way power-adjustable driver's seat, heated seats, leather upholstery, and heated side mirrors; and the Shinka package brandished a sport-tuned suspension, leather Alcantara seating, satellite radio, and 18" alloy wheels.
Changes of the RX-8 parts were minimal over the next two model years, although in 2008 Mazda did unveil a special RX-8 trim to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the rotary engine. This model was decked out with a special gray exterior, red-leather upholstery, 18" alloy wheels, foglights, a stiffer suspension, 18" alloy wheels, and distinctive badges. 2009 ushered in the model's first redesign, as a new front-end grille along with a restyled tail were the highlights. Amenities such as Bluetooth capability, a touchscreen navigation system, and an auxiliary audio jack were implemented, as well. A year later, Mazda discontinued the Touring and Premium packages from the lineup. This change redirected a significant number of standard features to the Grand Touring package.
Mazda understands the ever-present need for some drivers who prefer a little more pop, a comfy cabin, and infinite style. These kinds of drivers demand more. Lucky for them, the RX-8 delivers. It was the RX-7 that broke the mold for Mazda. The RX-8 picks up where its predecessor left off. This dynamic sports coupe is both stylish and reliable. It performs with elegance as well as toughness. It's quick enough, strong enough, but without the clanging and banging of its competitors. Sleek and well-designed, the Mazda RX-8 is one expressive ride.
