Considered to be one of the automaker's flagship vehicles, the Cadillac XLR is a two-seat roadster that premiered for the 2003 model year. It is constructed on the same Y platform as the Chevy Corvette but doesn't feature the same kind of power as its GM sibling. The XLR is outfitted with a 4.6L V8 engine capable of around 320 horsepower as opposed to the Corvette's more potent 6.2L V8, which throws out up to 436 horsepower. Its V8 engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. But raw performance is not what the XLR is designed for, as the model is geared more towards a luxury demographic than it is a racing one, despite some of its sportier elements. Similar to other Cadillac models such as the SRX, the XLR uses Magnetic Ride Control, which is an adaptive suspension system that adjusts to the road conditions. Perhaps the most distinctive part of the XLR is its retractable lightweight aluminum roof, which allows the car to ride as a convertible.
In 2005, Cadillac released the XLR-V, a high-performing version of the model. The XLR-V is equipped with a 4.4L supercharged V8 mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and capable of up to 443 horsepower and 414 pounds-per-foot of torque. Also differing on the model are such distinguishing XLR-V parts as bigger brakes 19" wheels. According to the tests run by the Car and Driver magazine, the XLR-V can reach 60 miles-per-hour in 4.6 seconds and 100 miles-per-hour in 11.3 seconds. While the "regular" XLR is every bit the luxury roadster, the XLR-V commands a loftier price tag thanks to its higher level of performance, and advanced underhood parts. Formally introduced at the New York Auto Show in 2005, the XLR-V (during its run in production) was one of GM's highest-priced vehicles.
When it comes to luxurious accessories, the XLR is loaded. Amenities include heated-leather seats, cruise control, dual-zone climate automatic climate control, keyless start, Bluetooth capability, and a Bose stereo system with CD. On the outside of the vehicle, 18" alloy wheels and xenon HID headlights are displayed. As for safety features, the XLR shows off antilock disc brakes, a tire-pressure monitoring system, rear-parking sensors, side-impact airbags, and stability control. Since its arrival on the roadways, the XLR has certainly received its fair share of attention. During its first year of production, it was nominated for the Motor Trend magazine's prestigious Car of the Year award as well as making Edmunds.com's Honorable Mention list for Most Significant Vehicle of the Year. AutoWeek magazine said the XLR "has a Corvette soul with Cadillac beauty," which many feel sums up the roadster best.
Some drivers want to express themselves with a more unique brand of intensity. The Cadillac XLR provides that opportunity, mixing everything that is great about knee-quivering power, aggressive style, and superb elegance. The XLR is a signature automobile that stands out primarily because of its unquestionable style and impressive power. Brandishing a V8, the XLR can deliver thunder and lightning rarely seen in thr domestic luxury models, while still pulling up with that VIP image. When it comes to what presents a complete package, the Cadillac XLR knows no boundaries, which is why it is such an eye-opener.
