A differential is a gear train uniting three shafts and transferring torque. In a differential, the rotational speed of one shaft is always the average of the rotational speeds of the others or a fixed multiple of that average. In automobiles, differentials are used for providing an automated and instant transfer of rotations from the driveshaft to the axles. Therefore, the differential is installed between drive axles.
