The Kia Motors began to produce the series of the subcompact automobiles in 2000. The Kia Rio came as a replacement of the first generation Pride, a subcompact model, which was sold under the Ford name in some markets. The two generations of the Kia Rio were available as a five-door hatchback and a four-door sedan. All models were equipped with the inline-four fuel gasoline and diesel engines. The front wheel drive was standard on all Rio models. The hatchback vehicle was worldwide marketed under the various nameplates: Rio RX-V in Canadian market and Rio Look in Chile. In the American automotive market, the hatchback was known under Rio Cinco name.
The first-generation Kia Rio was introduced in both 5-door hatchback and 4-door sedan body styles. The Rio was available with 1.5-liter I4 fuel engine producing 96 horsepower. From 2003 till 2005 was offered a larger version of the same engine, a 1.6-liter engine making 105 horsepower. The diesel engine was not available in the American market. The Rio provided the choice of a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic transmission. In American version, the power steering and a tachometer were hatchback's standard features, while optional on the sedan. The safety features included the seat belts, driver's airbag and ABS. For the 2003 model, the engine and suspension were upgraded, the new interior and exterior styling was offered.
In North America, the second generation was introduced as the 2006 model year. The new Rio was based on the redesigned platform shared with Hyundai Accent. This car was known under the New Pride name in the South Korea market. The Rio was powered with upgraded 1.6-liter I4 engine of 110 horsepower. The vehicle came with a new exterior parts and enlarged interior space. The safety features as well as the fuel economy were improved. In the United States the hatchback was renamed to Rio 5. The 2006 sedan was offered in the base and LX trim levels. The American version Rio 5 came only in SX trim, featuring the steering wheel covered with leather. In the United States market, a 4-door-sedan and a 5-door hatchback were available only with 1.6-liter gasoline engine. In 2007 the SX trim level was added to the Rio sedan lineup. The LX trim level was offered for the Rio 5 in 2008. The 2010 model comes as a 4-door sedan in Base, SX and SL trims. The new Rio received a face-lift. The previous grille is replaced with Kia's new bow-tie grille. The car side moldings are narrowed and body-colored. A 4-door hatchback Rio5 is offered in LX and SX trims. All models are available with 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine producing 110 horsepower and standard 5-speed manual transmission. The LX and SX trims are equipped with a 4-speed automatic transmission. The front-side and curtain-side airbags as well as ABS are available as standard safety features.
Modernly styled with the performance to match, the Kia Rio still makes some waves. The sleek, curvy exterior-shape elicits an edgy presence that stands out above and beyond most in its class. Sure it drives well. And of course, it has the signature "boost" on the blacktop everyone enjoys. But that's only part of the story. Because once this car is fitted with Kia Rio accessories and parts to give it a personalized feel, another chapter gets added to the tale.
