Jeep's entry into the compact truck market arrived in the fall of 1985 as a 1986 model. The new truck was named the Jeep Comanche, and compared to other small pickups, it was quite unique. The Jeep Comanche shared not only the Cherokee's front sheet metal, but also its unibody construction an unusual trait, as most pickups utilized body-on-frame construction. For a compact the Jeep Comanche was a bit on the chunky side, being slightly longer than its Ford Ranger and Chevrolet S-10 competitors. The Jeep Comanche was offered with a choice of two cargo bed lengths; one for the 7-foot long-bed model appeared in 1985, and another, smaller version for the 6-foot cargo bed debuted in 1987. The Jeep Comanche had a solid front axle with coil springs, instead of the more common independent front suspension.
The 1986 Jeep Comanche could be equipped with one of three engines. The base engine was the 2.5-liter four-cylinder with throttle-body fuel injection. Optional was a 2.8-liter V-6, supplied to American Motors Corporation from General Motors. American Motors Corporation also offered an optional 2.1-liter intercooled turbo diesel four-cylinder. The Jeep Comanche could be ordered with either Command-Trac or Selec-Trac four-wheel-drive systems. Changes to the engine lineup happened in 1987. Underhood help arrived in 1987, when a much-improved, fuel-injected, 4.0-liter inline six replaced the underachieving 2.8-liter V-6. With 177 horsepower, the Jeep Comanche was the most powerful compact truck available in the United States.
The Jeep Comanche was sold in a Base model, X model, and XLS model, although option packages shifted frequently during the Comanche's life. Pioneer, Comanche Chief, and Laredo packages soon supplanted the X models. The Eliminator was introduced as the 1988 sport truck model available in two-wheel-drive short beds. The Jeep Comanche was also available as a heavy duty 'Big Ton' package (only for the long-bed models). This package included heavier duty wheels and leaf springs, larger tires and the upgraded rear axle, which increased the stock payload capacity, well above that of any other mid-size truck. The truck handled very well, but its true purpose was off-road driving where it was second to none.
