For over 30 years, the Toyota Camry has been one of the most value-packed cars money can buy. It is an easy choice for those who need a reliable daily driver with a strong resale value. The all-new eighth-generation Camry that debuted for the 2018 model year was a sportier take on the familiar family car, complete with fresh, athletic styling and sharper driving dynamics. Still new from this redesign, the 2020 Camry is unlikely to need any serious changes. Although, Toyota decides to further enhance the sporty side of its mid-size sedan with the introduction of a TRD-tuned version. It is the first time that Toyota Racing Development applies its brilliant mods to a Camry.
The 2020 Toyota Camry TRD gets dashing upgrades inside, out, and performance-wise. The main exterior highlights are 19-inch black alloy wheels with red caliper covers, a unique grille design, and an aerodynamic body kit. A front splitter, rear diffuser, side skirts, and trunk spoiler not only add visual aggression but promise better high-speed stability as well. Inside, there are sport seats upholstered in black faux leather. You'll also find plenty of red accents throughout the mostly black-colored interior, including stitching, embroidery, and seatbelts. The most exciting mods are made to the car's chassis. The Camry got beefy underbody braces for higher torsional rigidity, while the tuned shocks and stiffer springs are there for better handling, as is a 0.6-inch lower ride height. Upgrades to the brake system include 12.9-inch brake rotors teamed with two-piston calipers. Meanwhile, a TRD dual exhaust is sure to get a sportier sound out of the engine.
The engine itself got no modifications – it is the same 3.5-liter 301-hp V6 found in the more powerful Camry models. Backing it up is the usual 8-speed automatic. As always, the Camry lineup includes an abundance of models ranging from the base L to the fun-to-drive XLE, so every buyer is sure to find the right car to their liking. Even the base version is rather well-packed and offers a solid 2.5-liter 203-hp 4-cylinder, the TSS-P suite of basic driver assist features, and the infotainment system that comes complete with a 6-speaker audio, Apple CarPlay, USB, and Bluetooth. Advanced equipment like a panoramic moonroof, premium audio, blind-spot monitoring, etc. can all be found on the options list. Those who live in the North will surely benefit from the return of the all-wheel drive Camry, which includes the Cold-Weather Package to boot. The 2020 model year marks the first time AWD is available on a Camry since 1991. All-wheel traction can only be had on cars powered by the 2.5-liter engine.
