The Chevrolet Equinox debuted in 2004 as GM’s first compact SUV to compete with the Ford Escape, Toyota RAV4, and Honda CR-V. Actually, the dimensions of the Equinox blur the line between compact and midsize sport utes. It’s longer than the Escape, offering that extra room everyone is looking for when choosing a family vehicle. The current Equinox saw the world in 2010; besides different styling inside and out, it got new engine options and lots of sound insulation. The Equinox entered the 2017 model year with insignificant changes; they only include another name for the fanciest trim (Premier vs LTZ) and new options packages for the LT: the Sport Edition and the stunning Midnight Edition packages feature exclusive wheels, numerous exterior enhancements, and leather trim. The Midnight package also boasts the exclusive Mosaic Black Metallic paint color.
For 2017, the Equinox offers 4 trim levels, all in FWD/AWD configurations. It boasts a pretty roomy interior; the space inside can be easily configured both for passengers and cargo. Over 30 cu. ft. of cargo space is available with the sliding rear bench and the seat up; with seatbacks flipped down, the cargo room increases up to 64 cubic feet. However, the CR-V, one of its main rivals, can easily accommodate over 70 cubes. The standard 2.4-liter 4-cylinder is somewhat underpowered for this SUV with its 182 hp yet it offers decent hwy fuel economy of 32 mpg. The optional strong 3.6-liter V6 capable of delivering over 300 horses makes driving more fun. Besides, it’s a pretty good choice for towing.
The Chevrolet Equinox is a reliable and versatile family vehicle. For 2017, all 4 trims have a rearview camera as standard equipment. Rear cross traffic alert, blind-spot monitor, and some other perks are found only on the LT and the top Premier version. The latter can also boast forward collision alert and an LDW system.
