Just like the engines that they are mated to, modern automatic transmissions extensively use electronic devices. It allows you to increase the overall efficiency of the powertrain, provide greater reliability and safety, shorten the gearshift time, and improve the performance of the automatic transmission. Except for sensors and various solenoids in their designs, the ATs also make use of a computerized management module – the transmission control unit (TCU). The same as that of the ECU (sometimes these two are united in one module), the operation of the TCU is based on software and settings provided by an auto manufacturer. And, just like ECU upgrades, the modifications of the TCU can result in a notable performance gain.
