The 2017 Mazda Miata MX-5 is as traditional as it is different. It is still a nimble roadster offering driving fun and simplicity that earned it a large number of devotees all over the globe. For 2017, it redefines an open-air driving experience by introducing the MX-5 Miata RF (Retractable Fastback). Inspired by the success of the third-gen MX-5 PRHT (Power Retractable Hardtop), Mazda came up with the RF model that was intended to make a convertible driving experience more comfortable by adding a simple to operate hardtop roof, while gaining the gorgeous look of a targa top. Packing a rigid hardtop into the already small trunk space of the Miata was a tough nut to crack, considering that the fourth-gen car’s shorter length left even less space. But after taking into account a number of ideas, the engineers at Mazda created a roof concept that is similar in operation to the Porsche 911 Targa’s roof, yet further simplified. The result was the roof that opens and closes in just 13 seconds, forming a beautiful fastback silhouette when closed and even leaving some space in the trunk. This configuration adds 113 pounds to the 2017 Mazda Miata MX-5 RF’s weight, but given that this car isn’t meant for autocross, the tradeoff is not critical.
The fourth-generation Miata debuted just last year, with substantial changes that made it even lighter, quicker, and more compact than its predecessor. So apart from the introduction of the Retractable Hardtop variant, there are no major updates to the 2017 Miata MX-5. The conventional lineup includes three different models - Sport, Club, and Grand Touring, while those who are going to buy the RF can choose from Club and Grand Touring options. Club models gained new standard safety features for 2017, which were previously offered by Grand Touring only - Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert. As always, the 2017 Mazda Miata MX-5 got a full suite of Skyactiv technologies aimed at reducing weight while taking efficiency and safety to a new level. It is powered by a torquey Skyactiv 2.0-liter I4 with 155 hp and 148 lb-ft directed through a fast-shifting 6-speed manual (standard) or automatic (optional) transmission.
All 2017 Mazda Miata MX-5 parts and accessories are designed so as to create a sense of the driver and the car as a single unity, based on the Japanese Jinba Ittai philosophy. As for the exterior, 2017 Mazda Miata accessories are perfectly blended together to reflect another philosophy – KODO Soul of Motion design. Inspired by the stance of a wild animal waiting to pounce, this design language expresses potential energy in static forms. It stands behind the Miata’s muscular, aggressive silhouette and ideal fluid symmetry. For those who want to make their roadster one of a kind, there’s a broad range of 2017 Mazda Miata MX-5 accessories and parts offered on the market.
