The Volkswagen Golf is a compact sedan that has been a part of the European automaker's roster since the early 1970s. It has also been known as the Caribe (Mexico) and the Rabbit in North America before the Golf nameplate stuck permanently. When it rolled off the line for the 1974 model year, the Golf was seen as a front-wheel drive replacement for the Beetle, although two years in the "hot hatch" GTI version premiered, delivering a boost in performance. The Volkswagen Cabriolet was launched a few years later, based on the popular Golf but displaying a convertible body-style. The second-generation of the Golf was introduced for 1983. Slightly longer, the Golf showed off similar powertrain components along with an updated body shape and improved interior layout.
1991 welcomed in the arrival of the third-generation Golf. Once again, it grew in size but kept the same wheelbase. A new Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) engine was used, which would wind up becoming a VW staple in several other models. A more common 2,8L VR6 could also be equipped. In 1993, the Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet was switched from the Mk1 platform to the Mk3. With a Golf-inspired body-style, the Cabriolet kept the same chassis until 2001 (although an update did take place in 1999 that included the following revised Golf parts: front/rear bumpers, a new front-end grille, new headlights, and other exterior styling cues) while the Golf would be switched onto the Mk4 platform come 1997, which marked the model's fourth generation. Two new variants that showed off improved performance were the Golf R32 and the Golf VR6 4Motion, and the well-known 1.8T. The 3.2L R32 was outfitted with a 3.2L VR6 and the 4Motion utilized the same powertrain, with the difference lying with the model's four-wheel drive system. The 1.8T, however, was equipped with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a sizeable amount of performance, especially given the segment.
It wasn't until 2006 when the new Golf Mk5 reached North American showrooms. When it debuted, the fifth-generation Golf was equipped with a 2.5L five-cylinder engine or a GTI variant which got its power from a 2.0 FSI engine, producing up to 200 horsepower. Volkswagen used a marketing campaign based on "Fast", inferring the desire for performance. The primary tagline was "fast lives inside every driver." Volkswagen released the Mk6 (6th generation) Golf in 2009. In previous years it had been marketed stateside as the Rabbit, but was now referred to as the Golf. The base engine was still a 2.5L five-cylinder configuration good for 170 horsepower and 177 pounds-per-foot of torque geared to a standard five-speed manual transmission with a six-speed automatic offered as an option. Once again, the Golf TDI was available, displaying a 2.0L turbodiesel engine which got credit for 140 horsepower and 236 pounds-per-foot of torque mated to a standard six-speed manual transmission with a six-speed dual-clutch automated manual offered as optional.
The Volkswagen Golf is a tribute to tried-and-true staying power. Alive and well for generations, the Volkswagen Golf has taken on a wide range of responsibilities since the beginning, providing its drivers with efficient performance and sporty profile. There is no disputing the Golf's presence on the street, as it remains a fixture across the land, thanks to its economical but stylish features and reliable auto parts. Enjoyed as a canvas by many enthusiasts, the Golf has the ability to present a dashing and fashionable image.
