Nissan 350Z Camshafts

A camshaft is one of the main engine components responsible for valve timing and determining the power band of your motor. The valve lift, duration of opening, and the exact time when exhaust and intake valves start to open or close directly depend on the shape of cam lobes and their location on the camshaft. Whether your Nissan 350Z is equipped with the VQ35DE or VQ35HR motor, it has four camshafts, two in each cylinder head. Besides, both of these powerplants feature Continuously Variable Valve Timing Control (CVTC), the function that increases engine output by altering the cams' positions via special hydraulic or electromagnetic mechanisms connected to the intake and exhaust camshafts.

Everything mentioned above works perfectly well for many thousands of miles, but the physical wear of moving parts can still take place. The number of issues can increase if you use the wrong motor oil or forget to add or change it timely. In DOHC motors, camshafts are the most remote parts from the oil sump, which means they can suffer first when there is a problem with lubrication. Particularly, thin oil channels leading to camshaft journals may get clogged, which results in the abrasion, overheating, and play of the camshafts.
