Ford Focus Engine Oil Coolers

It's commonly known that lubing and cleaning internal engine parts are not the only functions of motor oil – it also helps to cool down the pistons and some other parts that remain unreachable for antifreeze. In some motors that have quite a high nominal working temperature, oil gets too hot, and just cooling a sump with the flow of oncoming air is insufficient to support the necessary temperature of lubricant. As a result, its viscosity decreases too much, which badly influences its ability to create a stable film on moving parts.

As a way out of this situation, an oil cooler has been suggested, and it's still considered a good solution in many cars including your Ford Focus. Essentially, the cooler is a miniature cross-flow heat exchanger in which motor oil and coolant or air come close to each other. In practice, this part works well unless one or several of its gaskets get faulty. When the gaskets deteriorate, they may cause coolant and/or oil leaks. In some cases, a small amount of oil can be found in coolant, or vice versa, and it's vital to address the issue until it's too late for the engine.
